Full Description

A war memorial dating from 1921, and built to the designs of W.S. Weatherley (FRIBA). It was constructed of Portland stone and Hopton stones. The memorial has a square base on a chamfered plinth, which bears the names of the fallen in two World Wars on a Hopton stone panel to each face. This is surmounted by a lower base to tall square pillar with chamfered angles which is finished with cornice and plain cross. The memorial sits on three stone steps with chamfers to the angles, and a small podium with a curved stone seat to each angle, with small obelisk ends. It is a large edifice 28ft (8.5m) high with a cross surmounting a slender shaft of Portland stone. Four large Hopton Wood stone panels contain the names of the fallen and are fixed to the base, which in turn leads down to three steps on each side. Stone seats are situated on all four corners. The memorial was unveiled in 1921 to commemorate those who died in the First World War. Further names were added after the Second World War. The memorial includes a garden of remembrance. {3}{4}
