Full Description

Cropmarks of a probable Iron Age or Roman enclosure, on land to the north of Grebby Hall. Visible as a four-sided, asymmetrical enclosure, defined by a single ditch with an entrance to the east, and measuring roughly 65m by 60m. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1} More recent analysis of the aerial photography for this area identified the enclosure as cropmarks. The sides of the enclosure are roughly straight, with the corners slightly curved. The is a simple, terminally-defined entrance in the eastern side. The enclosure is trapezoidal in shape, measuring 42m north to south, and 58m wide across the northern end, tapering to 41m wide across the southern end. {2}{3} The re-analysis of aerial photographic data prompted an amendment to the formerly adjacent scheduling to be made in May 2024. The scheduling now more accurately covers the remains of the adjacent long barrow (see MLI42977), along with this possible Iron Age enclosure. The enclosure lies below the summit of a low plateau between two wide, shallow river valleys. The western river drains into the river Lymn, and that to the east is a tributary of the beck.
